"Food Should Not Hurt": Global Alliance Launches EoE Campaign on World EoE Day (May 22)

The Global Allergy and Airways Patient Platform (GAAPP), alongside 14 patient advocacy organizations from 9 countries and five continents, has launched the “Food Should Not Hurt” campaign — a unified call to action for improved diagnosis and care in Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE). The campaign marks the second annual World EoE Day, observed every May 22.

What is EoE? Eosinophilic Esophagitis is a chronic, immune-mediated disease in which a buildup of white blood cells in the esophagus causes swelling, inflammation, and injury. For most people, eating is effortless — but for those living with EoE, every meal can bring pain, food impaction, or an emergency room visit. Symptoms include difficulty swallowing, the sensation of food getting stuck, chest pain, and persistent acid reflux unresponsive to standard treatment. In children, EoE may also appear as poor appetite, vomiting, and failure to thrive. While the condition is more common in males and those with allergies or a family history of EoE, anyone can develop it.

The Campaign This year’s initiative features two multimedia productions aimed at patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. The first is an animated film presenting the EoE Patient Care Path — a framework to help ensure patients receive timely referral, accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and ongoing support. The second is a short awareness video drawing on the real-life experiences of two adults, a teenager, and a child living with EoE. Both have been translated into nine languages, reflecting the alliance’s commitment to reaching patients wherever they are in the world.

The Diagnostic Challenge Despite progress, patients frequently wait years for a correct EoE diagnosis, as the condition is often confused with common acid reflux or overlooked entirely. The campaign calls on healthcare professionals and policymakers to recognize the signs earlier and reduce these harmful delays. Treatment options have improved and now include dietary modifications, corticosteroids, and newer biologic therapies — though access remains uneven depending on geography and healthcare systems.

Beyond the Physical EoE carries a heavy social and emotional toll alongside its physical symptoms. Many patients experience anxiety and depression, withdraw from social eating, and miss work or school. Caregivers are significantly affected as well. The “Food Should Not Hurt” campaign recognizes this full spectrum of impact and advocates for care that addresses not just the medical, but the psychological and social dimensions of living with EoE.

World EoE Day 2026 Across the globe, the Alliance will mobilize through social media, healthcare settings, and public spaces — with buildings lit in EoE’s signature pink and a joint multilingual patient-expert webinar offering live education and Q&A. The Alliance is calling on healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the public to learn the signs of EoE, advocate for shorter diagnostic timelines, and support equitable access to care for all patients.
